Chapter 14

“Tell me again why we’re doing this?” Kim tossed her hair and reached down to tug at her dress. “I hate these kinds of things. Stupid weddings and stupid dressing up and nothing to show for it. What do you do? You go throw money at someone you don’t even like – buy them a toaster or whatever – and leave with a teeny, tiny container of bubbles purchased for the sole purpose of blowing them at the happy couple. It’s pretty stupid if you ask me.”

“I know. I feel the same way too.” Gwen was more than happy to linger outside the church while Kim finished her cigarette. She still wasn’t even sure why she bothered to come to Heather’s wedding, other than to show off. Fortunately, Kim was more than happy to help her with that. It wasn’t so much that Gwen had something to prove as…

No, that was exactly it. She had something to prove, not just to Heather, but to all their old high school friends who would probably be there. Since she eschewed their tenth high school reunion, this was her opportunity to show people she had made it. Not only had she changed, but she’d gotten exactly what she said she wanted in life.

“Hey, where are you staying for the convention in February?” Kim asked, letting the cigarette tumble from her fingers and then snuffing it out with the toe of her shoe.

Gwen raked her fingers through her shoulder-length hair and shrugged. “They’ll put me up at the hotel, but I’m sure we can find time to hang out while I’m there. Do you want to come to the con? I bet I can get you a free pass.”

“That’d be cool, but I might have a gig that weekend. I was hoping you could visit me if that’s the case. Considering you’re a special guest, I realize it might be hard for you to get away. We’ll figure it out, though, one way or the other.” Kim curled her arm around Gwen’s neck and gave her a gentle squeeze. “I’m so proud of you, do you know that? You worked hard to get where you are, comic girl. Just talking to you reminds me that dreams can come true. You’re my inspiration.”

Gwen dipped her head, a blush heating her cheeks. This was one of the things she missed so much about Kim – how thoughtful and encouraging she was, even if she could be sharp-tongued. Before Gwen could respond, someone stepped outside and gestured toward the church. “Hello, folks. Just a head’s up that we’re about ready to begin.”

The few guests still outside filed in through the double doors, Gwen and Kim the last ones to enter before the usher closed up the church behind them. Kim leaned close to Gwen and whispered, “What religion are they?”

“I don’t know. Heather really wasn’t religious in high school. I think I remember Kyle’s mom once referring to her as ‘nothinonian,’ which was pretty much her nasty way of saying Heather didn’t really have any personal convictions on the topic.
